5 works of the Holy Spirit in our lives

Some weeks ago, my staff got me extremely angry. I had left specific instructions regarding a task I had given to her and she went ahead to do the direct opposite of it. I embarrassingly lost my temper and found myself almost shouting in annoyance.

While I was expressing my anger, the Holy Spirit came and a verse flashed through my mind, Ephesians 4:26;

“When you are angry, don’t let that anger make you sin, and don’t stay angry all day”.

Immediately, the Word doused my anger and I went in search of soul food; my Bible and worship music. I believe I listened to some music from Bethel.

The episode made me realize that no matter how much you train yourself to control your emotions and not react negatively, something would always tick you off. Jesus knew this and that’s why we have the Holy Spirit to teach us all things and help us to become complete in Christ. He knew we could not do it on our own and that is why He left us with the Holy Spirit.

For many years, I struggled to live by myself, I knew that I could have a close and intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit but I did not know how. I did not realize that the Holy Spirit within me could help me overcome my problems and give me constant peace and joy. When I got the revelation that He wanted to help me in everything I needed to do and to fulfill the will of God for my life, everything changed for me.

“For it is God who is working in you, enabling you both to desire and to work out His good purpose.” Philippians 2:13

If you believe God has given you the Holy Spirit to help you; no matter the circumstances or problems that come your way, you will never have reason to get worried or overwhelmed. However, you need to take the step to ask for that help in your time of need.

“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:16

Let me share a few ways the Holy Spirit helps us in our christian walk:

Our Teacher who reminds us of God’s Word and teaches us everything

The Holy Spirit reminded me of God’s Word in my story. Study the Word for yourself always, it is the tool the Holy Spirit would use to teach you.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” John 14:26

“The anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you don’t need anyone to teach you. Instead, His anointing teaches you about all things and is true and is not a lie; just as He has taught you, remain in Him.” 1 John 2:27

The Holy Spirit also teaches us what our inheritance is in the Kingdom of God.

“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.” I Corinthians 2:12-13

Our Guide for every area of our lives

The Holy Spirit guides us through the journey of life and should be a vital part of our decision making process as believers.

“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth” John 16:13

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” Romans 8:14

“but your Teacher will not hide Himself any longer. Your eyes will see your Teacher, and whenever you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear this command behind you: “This is the way. Walk in it.” ” Isaiah 30:20-21

The Holy Spirit helps us overcome our fleshly desire to sin

The Holy Spirit helped me overcome my anger in the story I wrote above. Living a holy life is impossible without the help of the Holy Spirit. (Philippians 2:13)

“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh” Galatians 5:16

“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.” Romans 8:5

Gives us the power and boldness required to witness for Jesus

If you find it difficult to tell people about your faith in Jesus, you need the help of the Holy Spirit.

“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”” Acts 1:8

“in mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God, so that from Jerusalem and round about to Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.” Romans 15:19

The Holy Spirit helps us to pray

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is with the evidence of speaking in tongues which is our prayer language especially when we have no words to express how we are feeling.

“Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” Romans 8:26

This list is by no means an exhaustive one as the Holy Spirit is our most essential resource in our lives as believers.
